Why students first learn Mayamalavagowla

Many children start with mayamalavagowla composition

The origins of Carnatic music

Carnatic Music is a classical art form that dates back to many centuries ago. Purandara Dasa popularly known as Haridasas belonged to the division of Vishnu Worshippers and is the pioneer of this great Carnatic Music. He was the first to codify the lessons for beginners and had created the art of concrete syllabus that is still followed with small variations. It was he who introduced the mayamalavagowla (basic scale of music instruction) along with graded lessons including:
  • Swaravalis
  • Janta Swaras
  • Alankaras
  • Lakshana Geetas
To be trained in the classical Carnatic Music you should go through the voice training sessions named Varishas (Notes to train you to manage a specific raga

About Mayamalavagowla

The first step towards learning the beautiful Carnatic Music is mayamalavagowla. This is a symmetric raga which is very simple to teach and learn

Carnatic Music trainers, therefore, prefer this raga for the beginners’ lessons under the “Swara” Exercises. The scales in this raga are as follows:

  • Aarohanam (Ascending): S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S’
  • Avarohanam (Descending) : S’ N3 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S

A very calm raga that sounds beautiful into your ears and you can listen to it any time of the day. Mayamalavagowla is equal to Raag Bhairav in Hindustani Music

Compositions under Mayamalavagowla

Popular compositions under mayamalavagowla are:

  • Sri Gananatha Geetham
  • Meru Samana & Tulasidala Mulache
  • Mayatita Swaroopini
  • Pollapuliyinum
  • Aadi Kondar
  • Deva Deva

Even in South Indian Cinemas, you will get to hear some beautiful songs composed under this raga.

If you are serious about learning Carnatic Music and specifically Mayamalavagowla then don’t waste time finding a reputed Raaga School and seek the opportunity to learn the essence of Indian Classical Music.
Mayamalavagowla (pronounced māyāmāḻavagauḻa), is a raga of Carnatic Music (musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is classified as 15th melakarta raga under Venkatamakhin's melakarta system. Originally known as malavagowla, "maya" was prefixed to it after the advent of the scheme of the 72 melas. The number 15 was assigned to it following the Katapayadi sankhya system. This is a morning raga.

What Raaga School Offers

Carnatic Vocal

As the name implies here the emphasis lays specifically on your Voice than using the instruments. It is believed to have the capacity to extract the Graduation out of your Composition. The convergence of mayamalavagowla, other Ragas & Thalas offered great melodious patterns that have to be delivered with complete feel.
Proficient teachers here aim to bring out that particular feel from the students when they have taken the first step towards learning Carnatic Music. They are competent enough to sing it to the students in the most disciplined way so that they understand the Carnatic Music with the rules. Students can get to learn in the best possible way.

Varnam

Speaking about the Carnatic Vocal you will get the flavors of “Varnam” specifically. Let’s go back to History to understand this specification. Carnatic Music originated from Cauvery Delta and has been flourishing for ages. It specifically includes a monophonic song with improved variations. Introduced & then developed later a new Raga “Alpana” which starts with “Varnam”.

This is a kind of “Warm Up” Sessions for musicians followed by:

  • Ragas
  • Thalas
  • Krithis
  • Pallavi

Teachers here see to it that you learn “Varnam” which is the first step towards learning Carnatic Vocal.

Carnatic Violin

To learn the Violin you should build these two skills:

  • Listening &
  • Accuracy

This is because you need to perform the music with NO prior rehearsals, written music, or notation. Having good listening skills will help you recognize what a vocalist is playing and produce the same in a short duration.

Even if you don’t have the listening skills to learn the rhythm or lyrics of a Violinist you can learn it here. Teachers will guide you on how you can improve your listening skills via meditation or other tips. And they will further work to improve your level of accuracy in learning Carnatic Violin shortly.

Carnatic Flute

Also known as Venu you can learn to play one of these ancient musical instruments of Indian Mythology. Made up from Bamboo this is an instrument that you need to blow at the side to listen to some beautiful ragas.

Carnatic Flute is wholly made up of Bamboo unlike Western Flutes seen today. It has two ends – closed and open and NO fancy keys with which you can bring out the notes. Then how it is done. Never mind seeking lessons from great instructors at Raaga School who will see to it you put every note perfectly to the tunes of ragas.

Online Lessons
Thanks to the thinkers at Raaga School who have come up with Online Classes for the students who are interested to learn mayamalavagowla and other ragas even during this pandemic situation. If you have Smartphones or Laptops with Internet Connection then simply download the “Zoom App” from the “Google Play Store” and connect to their teachers instantly.

You are sure to get nostalgic to learn from the masters. And still if you any query feel free to ask their expert faculty and find immediate solutions.
